Proposal 2nd Draft Belfsky

For my Capstone Project, I would like to redesign a chapter from the Human Function and Anatomy textbook I was assigned to study throughout my stint as a Nursing major. I found the content was extremely difficult to comprehend the way it was presented. The text was small and often hard to read, the pictures, although beautiful were also hard to understand in context. The processes that presented throughout the text were sometimes not mapped out, making it hard to make connections.
Due to this, I ended up creating my own visual aids in order to comprehend the information presented. This didn’t go unnoticed by other students, when it came time to vote on which process chart all liked the best, mine would often win. I even had a former classmate come up to me about a year later and told me they really enjoyed my presentations throughout the class. This is when I knew, design was a more powerful tool than I had thought it to be at the time.
My enjoyment of taking apart dense text elements and translating them into more visual forms, lead me to change my major to graphic design. I felt I could do more good as a designer than a nurse. I could act as a visual translator for the betterment of understanding difficult associations. Make something easier to comprehend through form, color and simplification, is extremely satisfying when other people benefit.
This project will encapsulate my love of the bodies we occupy and the art they routinely create. Hundreds of processes occur on a biological scale every second within our physical beings, yet most of it goes unnoticed. I want to map out these events within a foldable book that can be unfolded into a large format poster. Much like the whole concept itself, the book would be easy to follow and understand on a small scale, but once folded out, show the complexities hidden in a microscopic world.

  1. I feel like this is going to be awesome. I hate science primarily because I really don't learn well with those textbooks and I am really excited to see these and how they turn out. I think it has some major potential to be not only really cool, but also really useful!

  4. Really interesting idea Ashley! I think because you are taking an experience in a field so far opposite from graphic design. That this project should be even more interesting because you do know about both subjects.
