Why Design?

At the beginning of study in Depaul, I want to learn fashion design. Yet DePaul do not have it, then I choose graphic design as my major. Through my two years learning of graphic design, I discovered that I am increasingly passionate on it, especially for logo design and typographies.

I feel that I still have a long way to go to being a professional designer, because design is not only a interests, it will turn to a business. I had a working experience in Shanghai last summer. I found that it’s very hard to meet the requirements that my clients put on. Sometimes my aesthetic is very different from my clients. Like the size of the font, the color of the background, the image that you choose, etc. I am not able to exactly use my own idea. I learned that graphic designer must know how to cooperate with others and meet their requirements. I have to constantly modify my design according to the others’ ideas.

During my working time, I discovered that I would not work in a commercial institute, because they already have a formal design mode. I cannot bring my creativity into the designing work. I like freelance designing, such as design posters, logos, and advertisements. Even though everything has its constraint, these kinds of design would be more innovative and interesting.

I am learning graphic design but it does not mean I will be a graphic designer in the future. My dream is to have a restaurant by my own and design the interior and the menu of my store. I can put my favorite elements on it. Graphic design is not just a design. It’s a platform to present my aesthetic and perspective of the world. Everyone has different aesthetics, you choose something that you feel it is attractive and get some inspiration on it to make a design.

I have been addicted to the fantasy in art for years, so I have been thinking that I might create my own art since then. I usually apply myself in “what do I draw” considerations and inspiration. However, in graphic design, there is always a need for client to have a logo, or a unique website, or advertisement posters. Since the need is already there, I am here to supply those clients a uniquely creative way to fulfill their needs. I believe that my design would catch people’s attention and lead them to consume. In this way, I feel that I’m helping people while I’m doing what I’m really interested in.  Therefore, doing graphic design is the best fit for me.
