Capstone Proposal - Hadiya Robinson

My proposal for my capstone project I want to explore and represent the natural hair movement among African American women, which has been growing over the past years. I wanted to explore this topic because I consider myself apart of this movement when I decided to embrace the my natural texture and found myself along with others looking for ways to show off and experiment with the versatility of my hair. Within this movement came many new natural hair care products, blogs, video tutorials, and etc. that offered a sort of accessibility to a growing community that has been noticed culturally around the world, in fashion, and in the media.

The project will focus on the various styles in which these women are wearing their hair, with an emphasis on textures and patterns. I plan on creating multiple(10) printed posters (18x24) illustrating  the various hairstyles accompanied by a pattern that represent the characteristics of natural hair textures. Each poster will include text on how to achieve the style in a concise instructional manner.

My goal is to experiment with illustrating intricate patterns and texture into my design which i feel will show the beauty and complexity that comes with natural african american hair.
