I chose graphic design ultimately because it was the one
thing that I really felt I could be good at, and as an extension, it was the
only thing that I felt I could make an impact with. As I went through classes and learned more
about the industry and about the ways in which designers can truly impact the
masses, I was only more confident in my choice to be a graphic designer.
As designers, we have a wide array of responsibilities and
expectations. Most primarily, it is our job to communicate. We are employed
because of our creative skills to communicate visually, whether it be to a
nation-wide audience through full scale advertising campaigns or to a single
person reading a book or magazine. We are essentially the architects of
information. We design the way a viewer digests and absorbs the information we
are tasked with presenting. Because of this, we as designers have a heavy
responsibility to present the information in a thoughtful and concise manner.
There is a huge opportunity for designers to shape the way the populous
develops thought and opinion surrounding certain topics or events based solely
on the involvement of designers in publication design, web design, packaging,
and advertising.
It is for this reason that I stuck with design. I have always
wanted a way to impact and perhaps even educate audiences that I would
ordinarily have limited or no access to at all. Design is found in all aspects
of life, and as such, it should be utilized as a tool to access and inform
people on the world around them.
