Leung - Why Am I a Designer?

Why am I a designer?

To me design is the perfect intersection between all the fields that I have an interest in or have loved in the past. As a kid I loved anything that was drawn, crafted, or just showed some form of creativity. With a family that had little and just arrived in a new country, we had to get by as we could. With no siblings, cartoons became my obsession, Legos were my foundation, and cardboard could become anything. Photography, graffiti, and the history of art were things I loved learning about growing up. As I went through high school though, going into the arts became less of a viable career and turned more into a personal interest.

Marketing became my first choice for a career path. I romanticized the idea of learning to craft these grand messages to larger audiences.  Yet the reality was far from what I had expected after spending a year at a business school. At this point I had never really knew what graphic design involved. After some research I found that this field brought together everything that I admired and it really just fell into place.

At the heart of it being a designer means keeping that innate boundless curiosity, that we had as kids, alive. It's this hunger for new ideas that allows us as professionals to give life to creations that take on a life of their own. That's what I truly love about this field, that I get to create artifacts that entertain, speak, and inspires people from all walks of life.
