For
my senior thesis project I chose to expand upon my learning’s from a philosophy
class I took my junior year. The class was called Philosophy of the City, and
in it studied the philosophical outlooks of Niekerk, Plutarch, Grosz, Foucault,
and Kierkegaard. Each philosopher has a
different outtake on how we as people are shaped by the city, but also how the human
body shapes the city. For example everyone and everything thing has its own
personal cell. I have my room, which is inside my apartment, which is in a city
block, which is part of Lincoln Park, which is apart of the city of Chicago,
which is apart Illinois, which then expands to the united states, and so on…
you guys get the point. The philosophy of a cell can also lead to the idea of
prisons, and how they are cells within cells, which are governed by power, just
like a city is governed by power. Power also controls social behavior, and how
we think we live in a city with so many people that we are not being watched
but yet there is not anonymity when you come to the city because you are never
alone. There are always people, strangers yes, but people nonetheless are
always observing. I found this class to be very interesting, and I want to
expand on it combining my graphic design background with the idea of the city,
and personally I have been transformed.
For
my design I want to create a series of 6 die-cut posters that have different
levels and depth. One poster for each philosopher explaining their point of
view, and the sixth would be about my transformation. I have always wanted to
experiment with die cutting so why not try it now! For my take-away aspect I
was thinking of making small cards in different shapes that give a short
synopsis of the philosopher, and then one of myself as well. The web component
is the last part that I’m not sure of… I could create a short motion graphic
piece depicting of the city cells, or an interesting app type thing, but I’m
not set on any idea yet. The die-cut
posters will consist of type, and imagery to portray the story of each
philosopher, and a specific color combination.
