Capstone Proposal
The Second City: A Cultural Reflection
My proposal for my Capstone project is a book that focuses on highlighting the great city that we live in, Chicago. I was inspired to do this project because although I’ve lived in the Greater Chicago area my whole life, in September of 2014 I moved to the city. The move has had a enormous change on my daily life and perspective, and I thought what better of a way to express my passion for Chicago than creating something that expressed the very things that make Chicago what is it. Visually speaking, the book will be influenced by artists from Chicago, as well as utilizing practices that are popular in Chicago media and design. The book will feature a historical and cultural focus on what makes Chicago the best city in the world.
With such a vast culturally history I plan to research on what entities have set precedence as leading forces in Chicago’s’ rich past. The main areas I plan to focus on are music, visual art, sports, food and drink.
Research will play a crucial role in this project, specifically in aiding the selection of what content will be suitable for the book. I plan to do a majority of the research in person, at sites that exemplify certain cultural embodiments, such as Wrigley Field, The Art Institute, etc. The rest of the research will be done through books, articles, and interviews with Chicagoans.
