Why Design? : Stephanie Beltrami

Why Design?

Before answering the question of Why Design?, I am first going to answer the question of Why Not Science? Seemingly unrelated, however, science put me on my path towards design. I have always been stuck between the arts and the sciences. Before I chose to study design, I was studying Psychology and Biology.

Surprisingly, I found similarities between design and science. Design, like science, has a practical aspect to it that is applicable to the real world. This appealed to me greatly because I wanted to do something that would be functional and useful to the world. However, science did not satisfy my yearning to create. I realized this during my projects and presentations, when I would prioritize the visual presentation and layout of the information over the actual content itself – I was practicing design when I was studying science. Design was present for me even when I was doing something entirely unrelated to design. It was only natural then to make the switch to Graphic Design because it seems that design has always been a part of me.

I don’t want to say that I chose design over science because it was easier, but that is actually exactly what it was. It was easier for me to spend hours behind the computer, drawing, designing, and creating, than it was reading and memorizing content. And that is because I found design infinitely more fulfilling. Science mentally drained me. Design, on the other hand, brought me to life.

For me, design satisfies my yearning for combining practical problem solving with a creative process and solution.
