Capstone Proposal // Timeline - Leung

Graff

For my capstone I will be creating a book that details the history, current state, & future of graffiti in Chicago. I've had a long running interest in all forms of street art and, in my opinion, it is one of the best features of any urban landscape. While I've walked past, gleamed, and gawked in appreciation at these works throughout the city; I've never really had the complete intention to find out anything more. I've lived in the city for 5 years and not once have I ever gleamed into the history or background from which these pieces originate.

This will mainly be a research project that I hope will be enlightening for both me & the readers. I've always loved learning the history of places I've been to. Learning how the culture of one nation can come to mesh with the culture of another to shape future change, is one of the most enjoyable things for me. To be honest, this stems mainly from my background in the culinary arts. The combination of ingredients and flavors, along with the history that comes with it, is absolutely fascinating . Finding out where the ingredients originated, seeing where it's gone, what dishes it has influence or been a part of, and where it is now...the process of uncovering this breadcrumb trail (sorry) is something I want to apply to the cultural aspect of graffiti.

We don't often see any coverage, news, or official info about graffiti that highlights it in a good light. The truth is that graffiti has and continues to have a pretty seedy background, specifically with turf/ gang warfare. I want to see what can be done to change that image, by learning what factors shaped it up to be what it is today. I hope that by showcasing what street art is currently, a conversation will be started that elevates street art to be a positive cultural aspect of Chicago.

The only difficulties I see in the process of completing this project will be concrete research & confirmable pieces of work with artists. Otherwise, there's a good amount of writing on the history throughout the U.S. & Chicago specifically.
