Drawing a Zoo
Proposal

From a young age I was always fascinated by animals. I thought every single one was interesting, I enjoyed getting books on animals watching shows about animals, anything that had to do with animals was so interesting to me. Some thing that really resonates with me is the nature of the books I was given. I was never a strong reader growing up. It was hard for me to read and write. My struggle continued for most of my childhood and my grades were severely effected from it. One thing that always made it interesting for me to read was I was given books about animals. Now even though I was not able to get a handle on my reading and writing abilities till later in my childhood. Reading about animals, which is something I love, gave me a positive thing to look forward to. I could push myself to learn not only how to read but also I could learn about animals. The books could be about animals or they could just feature drawings of them. These books were a really great positive outlook for me to not worry about where I was at in my class or how I was doing in school. I could just sit and learn about the animals I loved very much. I enjoyed reading about animals now with more ease then I did as a child. From a young age I loved to go to the zoo. Lincoln Park and Brookfield were both hot spots on my list of things I loved to do. Even now, while I am busy most of the time, I always try to go if time permitting. I think I enjoy animals so much because it opened my eyes to what is happening in our world to a lot of animals. They are facing deforestation, extinction, illegal sales, and so much more. Now that I am older I love to be out in the wilderness. I feel that I have a respect for nature and I feel that I have a responsibility for it.
The zoo really opened my eyes to the world of animals or should I say the animal kingdom. Even last year I enrolled myself in a zoology class. This may seem a bit odd since the class is so far removed from graphic design. But I will say hands down it was one of the best classes I have ever taken in my entire educational career. I believe in another life I would have liked to work with animals in some way if I wasn’t a graphic designer at heart. But luckily for me, with this capstone project I can in some aspects. When presenting the ideas in class from previous portfolios students had made. I was fascinated and a children's book type of drawing style for the fictional Mandela Zoo. For me this triggered my love for animals and fascination for them. I am proposing to create almost a similar type of style drawings for the Brookfield Zoo because it is one of my favorite places that has opened my eyes and intrigued me about animals. These would be ads almost advertising the animals of the zoo and showcasing possibly fictional structures or exhibits of where the animals were housed. I feel because the zoo played such a big impact on my love for animals and the fascination with them as well, it would be nice to create drawings for ads that represent the zoo and the excitement it has to offer. I plan on drawing and using the paint brush tool in both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to accomplish these tasks. I have usually constructed figures and various other things out of shapes in both programs. I think drawing and using the paintbrush will challenge, and push me, and really test myself for a great project. I plan on documenting this ordeal through my Tumblr account. This way I can document my process the 19 week period I am working on it. I plan on creating 9 different ads for the zoo. Included is the new logo children’s book title for Brookfield zoo. The animals I plan on drawing are: lion, wolf, koala, gorilla, elephant, alligator, toucan, and rhino. The color palette will vary because of the variety of animals. The lion would be brown and different shades of yellow. The wolf, gorilla, elephant, koala, and rhino will be different shades of black, gray, and white. The alligator will be different shades of green, and the toucan will be black, white, and different shades of orange. The new logo will be to resemble bamboo or wood so it will be brown and different shades of yellow. I plan on making the ad of the animals 11 x 17. For the typeface I’m looking at a size no bigger then 40pt. I am thinking of more child like fonts so Gills sans comes to mind. It is very big and bold much like the animals and is very easy to read, as well as fun looking.  The takeaway I would like to create would be almost the size of a postcard or envelope with one of the various images I’ll be drawing, and on the back it will say “come join us.” I want to showcase the children's aspect in the ads for the zoo because, when I was a child that’s where I really learned about these animals and  where my fascination for them grew as well. I would like to convey this aspect  through trying to influence other children as well to become interested in the zoo.
